It seems there is no posting or discussion lately. Nothing to talk about or is it that nobody has anything to say?
With county elections looming in a few weeks it might be good to get some dialog started on the candidates,
who they are, what they are promising and if they are worthy of our votes. At least those where there is a choice.
County Auditor:
Dawn Sattler (D) (incumbent)
Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett (I)
What choice is there here? Dawn has been in office for awhile, long enough to screw things up majorly. Roberts county
was audited several times and the Auditor's office was found lacking every single time. This past audit not only cost the county $50,000
but it was found that a very large sum of county money is missing and the Auditor has not been filing reports, has no idea what her
duties are and obviously is not remoresful over her lack of fulfilling what she is getting paid for.
Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett on the other hand, is a successful business person with good credentials and a good education
who is willing (and clearly able) to take on the auditor position and get things straightened out. She is the one who is
dependable and trustworthy to be handling our tax dollars, not someone who "misplaces money" or fails to file timely reports.

Floyd DeCoteau (R)
John Tchida (R)
Both of these are unknowns and even though their positions have been published in the Courier, they are so vague that
one cannot be chosen over the other. It seems to be DeCoteau in the lead slightly.

William Utne (R)
James Crawford (D)
Don Carlson (I)
Mr. Utne didn't fill out a questionnaire. Don Carlson has been interested enough to attend most of the CC meetings since filing for office,
which says a lot. Both Carlson and Crawford gave some good answers in their questionnaires, but were vague on the issues so this one is
a toss-up.

Chad Ward (D)
Roger Navratil (I) (incumbent)
Mr. Paulson has some very good points in his questionnaire and from flyers found around the county he addresses most of the major issues
thoroughly and has well-laid plans to solve them. He utilizes common sense and everyone knows the current CC does not.
Mr. Ward seems to have dropped off the public route here. No questionnaire filled out so cannot make an assessment on him at this time.
Mr. Navratil is an incumbent and he has shown everyone that he is an extremely poor choice for any elected position. He has no common sense,
no problem-solving skills, little intelligence...but lots of arrogance and mouth. He is a follower and he has proved that to us already.
We need someone who will stand up and take action when needed and know when to be quiet and listen when needed. Mr. Navratil is not that person.

Spotted a line in the Courier a couple of weeks ago under CC minutes regarding another opt out vote in June. Wondering why another vote on this subject but the CC still have not reduced their salaries or number of meetings etc.
Has anyone heard this or have more about it?
I had'nt heard that but I do know they voted to have employees pay $50 of their $457 a month insurance. Now how many employers pay full insurance for their employees? Take that number times the number of employees and see how much its costing the taxpayers!!!
I added insurance up just for salryed people, $30,162 a mont5h or $361,944 a year!!!! I did'nt do hourly ones. Now thats more than most of us make a year!!!! Plus State auditor has been there since ist part of Nov.(usually takes week,week and half to do adut)at $55 a billable hour. Wonder whats wrong that its taking so long??? Wonder if they will tell us after its doine??? Oh yes its public knowledge so I encourge all to get a copy after its all typed up and ready at State.
I know the auditor didn't put out any audit reports for over 2 whole years so maybe thats why the state is here so long.
Isn't that what the county auditors job is? auditors do audits don't they? Seems ours does the commissioners work....
Commissioners did defer wages for 3 months not give up but defer so they will get a check for $2,250 at the end of those 3 months. From what I hear court house staff arn't willing to give up a day a month to save money. I read in Black Hills paper staff of a county there were willing to do a day a week so no one would be laid off.
Can't they simply order a 4 day week and be done with it? Who works for whom?
They could make a 4 day week work.
Of course they can but some on there are ran by Auditor so that how it goes. Election is coming soon. Hopfully voters turn out and make a change. They put in 2 good ones last time so we need more. They are out numbered. May I suggest you call your commissioner or any one of them you want and make that sugestion. I'm sure most votersw will back you.
On the issue of county paying employees insurance in full, are the employees of the county not tax payers? So, how is it that you think you alone are responsible for the cost of their insurance? Roberts County pays the lowest salary in the state to their employees, then adds the insurance as part of their wage and thinks they are doing them a favor. Other counties not only pay their employees more in wages, they still add insurance as well.
Apparently the county is so broke they don't know if they can pay wages after Feb. and all of your 911 will go through Watertown starting 2012. All 911calls will be relayed directly to the officers through computers in the cars. Be prepared for them to NOT get the right information, and will they have a clue as to where Rudebusch Corner is? How about Big Coulee housing, and what about BIA roads that they know absolutely nothing about? Have you wondered what the cost of putting up more towers is compared to upgrading the 911 system the county already has in place or how much the cost will be paying Watertown to dispatch these calls? How much are they already paying Watertown for the southern part of the county? Do you think Watertown dispatches these calls or are they in turn turned over to Roberts County dispatchers to do their work for them, with not only wrong information but not enough information? How would you like to have the wrong ambulance dispatched to where you live and have it take them over an hour or more to get their because they don't have a clue as to how to get there and have to call Roberts County to get directions?
Exactly where did the auditor and the commissioners spend the money? Now instead of paying overtime to the employees, they have implemented comp time. Wonder what the Department of Labor has to say about that as well as how are they going to pay it out, or are they just going to add it under their regular vacation time and then not have to pay time and a half for overtime worked? How are the auditor and the commissioners going to try and screw employees out of their wages this time?
The county has so mismanaged the money they now get that the opt out wouldn't have helped them the first time. Don't think that they won't find a way to get it anyway.
Who decided 911 was going to Watertown? At 911 meeting with Watertoiwn no dicesion was made. Noone wants it to go there including the Law Enforcement so commissioners would be fools to do it anyway. Talk to Pierre I did, they can put in for grants to upgrade.Pierre's not saying they have to go south. Sorry but aqll countys do not pay full insurance. That can be seen by going on internet and Countys that have sites.
To add on to my above post I agree some workers at county are under paid and how do they take comp time when they won't even let Sheriff Department hire enough so they can take vacation days???? There is no coverage for it, People work double shifts when someone is ill.

on the subject of the county being broke....why did the CC pay a million dollars for the quarter of land they bought from Hillberg by the landfill? Isn't that overvalued?

Comp Time= Instead of paying overtime, the employee gets pd in leave time. I'm not sure how it's setup, an hour of OT for an hour of Vacation? It should be setup like this. If you worked an extra 8 hour shift, your comp time should be 12 hours. This is how it’s done at most places. Personally, I'd rather build comp time for vacation time, but if you’re on a budget and trying to earn more money, comp time isn't for you. Hope this helped.
Thanks for the tibit on the piece of land. Funny now they want to sell a piece of the landfill to the city!!! By the way the state Aditor has been here since Nov. and its costing taxpayers $55 a billable hour!!!!! Wonder whats up?? Poor book keeping? Over spending?? Taking from one fund to another? There are some funds you cant touch for anything but what they were set up for. Like 911 and 24/7 they can only be used for that program. Of course 24/7 is a state program so they would be in hot water if they dipped in there.
What is the cost of this special election?? Approx. 75% of voters said "NO" before but the CC must be still looking for someone to bail them out of the mess they have created. If the results of this state audit are ever released I believe we will find county funds have totally been mis-managed but then we have a great new jail

Give me your opinion on these facts. For a period of time (I don't know how long)a commissioners wife(Roger Narvatils)rented 3 acres of Roberts co.land by County Shop in New Effington for $75 for all 3 then subleasing it for a good profit. Lease was up so 5 weeks ago at meeting a letter was read that she would buy the 3 acres for $800 Commissioners said they would look into cost of accesing it to sell. Commission Narvatil said "If she don't get what she wants you guys wont like the outcome" The next week the Auitor gave them a letter that the farmers who had been sub leasing said they would lease it from county for $450 which is $150 a acre Narvatil then said his wifew would pull the contract with these people on her land. Well lo and behold the next week they had a letter that farmers were recinding their bid be cause of a misunderstanding. Oh I know it was said Commissioner Zimpel misrepresented something. Thats not true I ran that rumor down and thats just what it was. After underlieing threats by Narvatil its almost crystal clear they were carried out. Not sure but thats the only thing that makes sence!!!! Commissioners were looking at a farm program to put it into was what was mentioned at meeting. Now is that neptotism at its finest that a commissioners wife was renting land from count for a meer $25 an acre. If they do business that way no wonder the county is broke. Then buy land by landfill from one of their co-horts for a high price which land was'nbt worth by landfill now want to sell part of landfill to city. Why did they buy more when it wasnt needed????? Any one got any answers to this crazynest??? Georce and Zimpel were not aboad then it would have been Voltz and Sticland who by the way I hear is putting his nose in his nefhews job off who to dig out and who not. Roads are still a mess in some areas. Will we ever have commissioners who will work for all the people instead just a few chosen ones???? We need to put in 3 new ones to help the to good ones we got last election and get a new auditor!!!! Her faulty book keeping is costing the tax payers a hefty sum. cause state auditor was here 2 months!!!!
Roger Narvatil also got publiclly repremended by the States Attorney not to many meetings ago for telling the Auditor not to put something in the minutes. That is a fact and not just coffee table talk.(even tho is was a hot topic at Billys for awhile. Who does trhis commissioner think he is?? God???Now was that in the minutes??? I think not!!! We need to take a tape recorder up to meetings. Yes its legal to do. Other counties have it on TV or the vidio it. Why not Roberts Co.???
Well a add on about above commissioner Roger N. He came to a meeting when interstate 29 was still closed (HP said they opened it at 9am.)got there at 8:40 20 minutes before it was open and said he drove on I 29 and it was fine. Again violating the law. And yes he did violate an open meeting law by telling Aditor and a reporter there not to put what he said in paper or minutes. It was something on land deal. And yes States Attorney repremended him. I was at that meeting. He pretty well thinks he can do and say what he wants. Talk to people in his district up north and they will tell you where he spends his time. I drove to New Effington and got an ear full, I will not repeat it here as Admin has ask no bashing and I respect that, even tho it would be the truth.
To the previous poster: where does Roger spend his time please? Truth isn't bashing IMO, it is truth...
Also check out the last weeks Courier dated Feb 2 in the "official" CC Report. You will find mention AGAIN of placing yet another opt out vote to the voters in June, this time using the excuse of snow removal.
Bet they could have moved a lot of snow for what it will cost the county to remove that rock road and replace pasture.....
Well,well heard at the coffee shop Narvatils wife, which is the same as him doing it uped the price to buy the 3 acres and when it was tabled for futher reveiw Roger got a little testy. County selling to one of their commissioners??? Sounds and looks very improper!!!! I beleive I for 1 will check this out and see just how legal it is!!! I'll let you all know what I find out.
Does anyone know the price he submitted to CC? Might be a buy for someone who wants to farm and has land nearby or someone who wants to hunt or?? Make him pay for it.
$1,000 was the last offer!! Sounds very unethical to me. I don't know who has land close besides Roger and wife. Its 3 acres by the county shop in New Effington. County needs to stand up and put it into na county,state or federal program. Do something usful with it. Maybe grow sweet corn and sell it to help cover for many hours(at $55 A hr) it took State Auditor to straighten out Roberts County books, Ya think???? I like your idea Dartman let tribe keep buying Sisseton up.
I told you I'd let you know what I found out about commiss dealing with commiss on that land. They are still looking up the legalitys but did say its highly unethical. And will look crooked to the public.

Well according to Native blog their Officals are corrupt also, so at least Roberts County would only have one set of Corrupt people running the County instead of two!!!! So let Tribe buy! At maybe there would be some business's and jobs around because if we all worked together Native and White we could make a major difference. Certain Commissioners going way back have complained about how much money Tribe gets from Goverment and them not paying taxes so lets put that to use!!! One big County joining together for what is best for all.!!!!

Well as usual minutes are not ready yet has to be 2 weeks behind here when meetings from other counties go out next if daily paper or the next weekly paper so want to make sure of facts. When new laws go into affect July 1 open meetings law now is public can get rough draft of minutes if not done fully within 24 hrs after meeting. Also public can have a packet of whatever is given to commissioners to be discussed prior to meetings. So we will be getting them weekly within 24 hrs and see how many changes go out when published. Hull and Narvatril are inlisting the help of others to get thier way done by the sheriff. All I can say is Hang in Tasa and stay your own man. Do not bow to their vindictivness just because they dont like someone.Election is coming and we want to keep you as you are not a yes man.
Fact: You can ask for a rough draft of the CC meeting within 24 hours of the meeting at the Auditor office.
They cannot refuse your request.
This is current, you do not need to wait for some new law to get this. You can do this now.
The draft copy is much more accurate than anything the Courier prints anyhow.

I got it Why they dont want AA in jail. It scares those two.Hull and Narvatril. Hull should have went long ago then he would be sober and pleasent instead of dry and miserble and the other one needs to attend those meetings himself. Thats usually what scares people is they know it fits them!!!!!
Let's not forget that Claudia was right with the RCC trying to IMPEACH Gary G when he was Sheriff. Claudia is not worth sticking up for.... We should also rememer she is on Parole herself for stealing from people.

Just heard our "Ramkota" jail is down to one federal prisoner and BIA won't even start to thinking about signing a contract. That leaves us taxpayers a MAJOR monthly bill despite what the former sheriff and CC promised us. And they wonder why the county is broke.
You are right Dartman, Pierre will be getting 20 for sure in their new jail as thats what they contracted for. They have to pay for 20 beds used or not so you know the Feds will keep them full. Now why did'nt our commiss think of that. And of course they use as many beds in Aberdeen as they to have a Federal court house. Out of county juvies are drying up too.
For one, Pierre & Aberdeen both have Federal Court in the city. Sisseton nor Roberts County does. A theory? Why would another County or Fed's brings prisoners into a jail that allows a convicted felon who is on active paroll to roam the jail? Say what you will, any agency will call that a security risk! Kudo's to Ben P for putting a stop to that non-sense.
You are so bright, felons can work as jailers. Just because a person is on parole does;nt mean they are worsre than a felon off!! Many felons work in City,County,State and Federal jobs. You take3 people as they are now and the inmates listened to her. Don't matter shes doing it else where anyway, We were/are mostly Native out there and I'm sure thats some of your problems Native dont deserve the help. Do you beleive there's only one Felon working in Roberts Co? Theres a few and some of us are on parole yet. We work at all the Cacinos, and many other places in the county. So live with it. Some of are Native some are white but we've paid our dues and have yhe right to live and work where we want.

But I can tell you that there was an argument between them and Eddie Madsen when Madsen tried to stop them from approving all the drainage.
They told him they were going to approve every drainage request and he walked out.
Where do they figure all that water will go? Or are they even thinking about that issue?
There was a lot of loud "discussion" and a long CC meeting today.
Speaking of no Roger next year, is there anybody decent running up there??? Please tell me there is someone other than Chad Ward. If he got in that would be the worst thing thats happened to this county yet, and that's saying a lot....Chad can't managae his own finances please don't put him in charge of our's.
Gene Pallson is running up there. I know hes been thru alot with his own businesses and hes always bounced back and for sure hes out spoken and I feel quite honest so he will get my vote. I totally agree we do not want Ward running bour county or our district.

Yes Gene can get a little radical, but it will be toward the best for Robrts Co. You wont see him throwing money away or taking from one fund and giving to an another, You ask him about how much moneys in a certain fund and he will tell you. He beleives in open goverment, Hes concerned why state progam 24/7 is listed with county monies and in the red when the co is not to tough it. Its state and supports its self but they have it in the red. Someone is contacting Att Generals off ice to day as they are in charge of that fund. There is lots of things they could do to live within the budget. They choose not to do anything except whine when the money is gone.
The voters will have to live with the mess these CC and the ones before them made for years to come.

He sits in his office all day and has coffee with Gary Sheldon, Claudia and Doug Karst, and it's costing the tax payers over $60,000 a year for him to do this while he dismisses good cases all the time!! If the commissioners were serious about cutting the budget then they should give back their pay raises , and why not make it retroactive and give it all back . doubt that would ever happen
Hey they went 3 months with no pay!!!!! Ya right we're suppose to jump up and down??? As soon as taxes started coming in they were some of the 1st to be paid for those 3 monthsw altho a couple tried to push it thru to for go it!!!!! Horten and Zimpel tried to change meeting day and or time or both so States Attorney could be there to0 answer questions and more people could make meetings. Guess what George and Narvatri voted nay, Hull broke the tie with a nay saying "its always been this way" Thats the problem with some of these guys can't except this is 2010 not 1960.

As most people already know by this time Cheryl Rondeau-Basset DID file to run against Dawn for the auditor's office.It will be a major challenge for anyone to straighten out the existing mess (See State Auditors Report) and I applaud her for stepping up and accepting the challenge. NOW lets all support her in the upcoming election.
