County Elections Soon

Upcoming County Elections!!

It seems there is no posting or discussion lately. Nothing to talk about or is it that nobody has anything to say?
With county elections looming in a few weeks it might be good to get some dialog started on the candidates,
who they are, what they are promising and if they are worthy of our votes. At least those where there is a choice.

County Auditor:

Dawn Sattler (D) (incumbent)
Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett (I)

What choice is there here? Dawn has been in office for awhile, long enough to screw things up majorly. Roberts county
was audited several times and the Auditor's office was found lacking every single time. This past audit not only cost the county $50,000
but it was found that a very large sum of county money is missing and the Auditor has not been filing reports, has no idea what her
duties are and obviously is not remoresful over her lack of fulfilling what she is getting paid for.

Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett on the other hand, is a successful business person with good credentials and a good education
who is willing (and clearly able) to take on the auditor position and get things straightened out. She is the one who is
dependable and trustworthy to be handling our tax dollars, not someone who "misplaces money" or fails to file timely reports.

This blog endorses Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett for Roberts County Auditor.

County Commission #1:

Floyd DeCoteau (R)
John Tchida (R)

Both of these are unknowns and even though their positions have been published in the Courier, they are so vague that
one cannot be chosen over the other. It seems to be DeCoteau in the lead slightly.

This blog endorses Floyd DeCoteau for Commissioner #1

County Commission #3:

William Utne (R)
James Crawford (D)
Don Carlson (I)

Mr. Utne didn't fill out a questionnaire. Don Carlson has been interested enough to attend most of the CC meetings since filing for office,
which says a lot. Both Carlson and Crawford gave some good answers in their questionnaires, but were vague on the issues so this one is
a toss-up.

This blog does not endorse any of the 3 candidates for Commissioner #3

County Commission #5:

Eugene Paulson (I)
Chad Ward (D)
Roger Navratil (I) (incumbent)

Mr. Paulson has some very good points in his questionnaire and from flyers found around the county he addresses most of the major issues
thoroughly and has well-laid plans to solve them. He utilizes common sense and everyone knows the current CC does not.

Mr. Ward seems to have dropped off the public route here. No questionnaire filled out so cannot make an assessment on him at this time.

Mr. Navratil is an incumbent and he has shown everyone that he is an extremely poor choice for any elected position. He has no common sense,
no problem-solving skills, little intelligence...but lots of arrogance and mouth. He is a follower and he has proved that to us already.
We need someone who will stand up and take action when needed and know when to be quiet and listen when needed. Mr. Navratil is not that person.

This blog endorses Eugene Paulson for Commissioner #5

Hopefully this will be enough for a dialog to get started here. Any pro's or con's on a candidate? Please enlighten us.
The most important thing is that you get out and VOTE on November 2nd. Of course absentee voting is going on right now.

Carlson is the best man for #3 cc spot!!

I agree Carlson would be good. I have nothing against JC (all though the tribe threw him out for mis-managing money right? Does anyone have the real story on that deal?) but Don would just be better. For town I hope people are smart enough to not vote for John Tchida, he would be terrible. In the North I hope they are smart enough to not vote for Chad W. 3 kids out of wed-lock, (his girlfriend was 15 and he was 20 when they started dating), just claimed bankrupsy (so he can't manage his own money, much less ours) and was arrested for a DWI, so he likes to drink and drive. He's told people he hates Sisseton and is just trying to get in so he can "mess with people." We don't need that, he have enough problems.

I was amazed that in Dawn Sattlers campaign ad the words reliable and dependable were used. I think she has proved that she is definately neither of those.

"No bashing or profanity will be allowed. Please keep it clean, keep it focused and keep it fair.
This blog is not moderated but any comments that contain profanity or bashing will be deleted."

That is in side comments telling us about the blog. And then the Administrator says this in opening comments:
"Mr. Navratil is an incumbent and he has shown everyone that he is an extremely poor choice for any elected position. He has no common sense,
no problem-solving skills, little intelligence...but lots of arrogance and mouth."

Perhaps I don't understand the meaning of the word "bashing" because that would seem to qualify.

Thank you for expressing your opinions, selections and your evaluations of the candidates. Election day is upon us and it is very important that each and every registered voter express their opinion by voting. And "thank You" for keeping this blog alive. Way too few of the possible bloggers use this for an exchange of views and factual information while too many use it only to slander with their negative comments.

it sounds like the moderator gave a pretty honest and accurate account of Mr. Navratil. The only problem is sometimes the truth isn't very pleasant to hear.

It is not an honest and accurate account, it is an opinion. If those words were coming from former employers or people who had worked with him during his life I would say there was some accuracy. This is the problem with our elections lately. Instead of tell us why they would be right for the job most candidates are saying "Vote for me because I am not him". If one candidate is running a negative campaign and we don't like the other candidate we should just not vote on that particular race. On some of the candidates running I know nothing about them because they have told me nothing, they are too busy running down their opponent.

We all know that blogs are all about opinion. That said, the mod has laid out the good and bad points of each candidate if known, has asked for our input where not known and basically told us to make up our own minds and vote for who we think would be the better person for the job.
To me that is not bashing, just a statement of known facts or behavior the candidates have exhibited previously, therefore would probably exhibit same in the future.
Thanks for keeping this blog updated!

We ,the people of this county, are the employers of the incumbents seeking re-election. So, since they are our "employees" I would think the we are all entitled to have an opinion based on their past job performance.I would think after a number of years in office we would all have some opinion of them one way or another.

I agree with the second comment on this blog. Chad Ward can't manage his own checkbook, how can he manage ours??????

"He has no common sense,

This statement could probably be applied to most posters on this blog as well. I see lots of criticism of our elected officials but no insight as to what they could do better. I see no solutions to the problems. I see only bashing of our leadership and then bashing of anyone who might say something positive about them. I know almost everyone on the commission, as well as the School Board and City Council. While I can't say I agree with everything they do, I can say they are all decent people who want our community to do well. We may not agree with the way they are trying to accomplish things, but how about giving some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism instead of just saying they suck.

To "Rick"
it's hard to come up with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism on a CC who takes our tax money and spends it on a paved road to his home. And hard to find anything CONSTRUCTIVE about throwing our tax dollars away on an extravagant land purchase by the landfill (remember the Hillberg Hush? worthless land way overpriced that was sped thru secretly).
also what can be said that is CONSTRUCTIVE about shoving a jail down our throats with a bunch of lies and refusing to go together with the Tribe to build one together?
These "misdeeds" were not mistakes, were not oversights nor were they honestly carried out.
Roger N is one who sat at the table and voted like he was told...'nuff said?

As for what the CC (or Auditor) could do better? For starters they could open the meetings and have them put on TV or the internet, maybe have the printed copy of the meeting match what really went on? Hire somebody to balance the checkbook (like we all have to do).

Oh that landfill purchase? Roberts county is STILL making payments on it. Wonder why the county is broke and where did all that money go that they "can't find"?
